Chapter 16: The Trade

Presley led us back out of the stairwell, and she stopped in front of the school aide.

"Take Julian to the library," she said. "Hattie and I have business."

"Hattie," Julian said.

"Go," I told him. "Please. Let me do this one."

He went, with the aide at his elbow, and he looked back at me three times before the corner.

Presley walked me past the watching hallway and into the headmaster's office.

The headmaster stood when she came in, which I noticed.

He did not stand for me.

"Sit," Presley said, and nobody argued.

The office had a leather couch and a window onto the quad, and a desk the size of a small boat.

On the desk lay a single sheet of paper, and a pen on top of it.

I knew what it was before I read it.

"Statement of Withdrawal," I said. "Special Election for Class President."

"It's short," Presley said. "You'll appreciate that."

"And in return?"

"In return, Julian's enrollment is lifted at noon today. He sits for his exams. He keeps his place for the rest of the year, with his tuition paid."
