Chapter 24: Founders' Day
Julian came home at nine that night.
I was at the kitchen table with my calculus, and I put down my pencil.
"Well?"
"She offered me a seat," he said.
My mother turned off the burner and sat down across from him, with the dish towel in her lap.
"On the scholarship fund committee," he said. "The one that decides who gets an award."
"The chair says a Whitcombe should know what a file looks like from the other side."
"That's a good seat."
"It's a seat nobody wanted me to have. They wanted a name on the door."
"She wants me to read every file, and to vote, and to be outvoted sometimes."
He took off his glasses and turned them over in his hand.
"And the house will be sold by the independent party. The sale clears the debt, and nothing is left in my name."
"And tuition?" I said.
"The crew job covers part, and the committee seat comes with a stipend," he said.
"The bunk is yours until you graduate," my mother said. "And then we'll see."
He laughed, helplessly, and wiped his eyes with the heel of his hand.
