Nobody made a sound.
Then the old woman in the pink cardigan started to cry, out loud, in her wheelchair.
The gray wolf trotted two circles in the moonwort, sneezed, and flopped over on her back in the frost with all four legs in the air.
Krista burst out laughing.
"That's her," she said. "That's absolutely her."
Roark made a noise next to me that was half a laugh and half something else.
He put his face in my hair and didn't move for a long time.
When Addison shifted back a few minutes later, Krista already had a flannel shirt held up like a curtain.
Addison came out from behind it buttoning it crooked, barefoot, grinning so wide her face looked like it hurt.
"I could smell everything," she said. "Danica. I could smell what the chair had for dinner."
"What did he have?"
"Fear, mostly."
The ring broke into noise.
Somebody howled, a Yardley woman, and then a dozen more did, and then half the clearing.
Over it all, I heard Gran's friend banging her thermos on a rock.
