We got home at eleven with a casserole, a bag of oatmeal cookies, and a card from the great-aunt that said Don't Be Soft.
The townhouse was dark and warm and smelled like the lilies Cosima had sent.
Sebastian turned on one lamp in the kitchen.
"Sit," he said.
I sat at the island.
He took off his jacket, his shirt and his trousers.
He folded them over a stool with the care of a man packing for a long trip.
Then he took an apron off the hook by the stove and tied it on.
It was white, with a stain from a long-ago tomato.
It was the only thing he wore.
"Amendment 4," I said.
"Once a week," he said. "I've kept it every Sunday since November."
"I know. I've been keeping count."
He lit the burner and cracked four eggs into the pan.
His back was bare in the lamplight, with the scar along his ribs and the apron strings tied in a neat bow above his ass.
I watched him cook.
It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen a man do for me.
He slid the eggs onto a plate, set it in front of me, and put a fork in my hand.
"Eat," he said.
"You first."
