Chapter 12: The Welfare Check
The knock came at ten past seven, hard and official.
Nathan woke with Bowen's arm heavy across his chest and the gray light on the ceiling.
He knew that knock.
It was a county knock, three fists in a row.
"Stay," he said, and got out of bed.
He pulled on sweatpants and the nearest shirt and went down the stairs two at a time.
Behind him, Bowen rolled over and groaned, "What time is it?"
Nathan opened the front door.
A sheriff's deputy stood on the porch with a clipboard.
She was a tall woman in a tan uniform who had once held his stamp pad during a power outage.
"Morning, Nathan," she said, apologetic. "I'm sorry. I'm doing a welfare check."
"On who?"
"On Bowen Sorensen." She looked at the clipboard. "His wife called it in at six-thirty. She says he didn't come home and she's afraid he's being held somewhere against his will. She gave this address."
Nathan stared at her.
"Against his will."
"She says you have a history."
"The review cleared me on Monday. You were in the hallway."
"I know." Her mouth twitched. "I'm just saying what's on the report."
Footsteps came down the stairs.
Bowen appeared behind Nathan in bare feet, wearing a gray T-shirt of Nathan's that stopped an inch above his belt.
His hair stuck up on one side.
He leaned on the doorframe and squinted at the deputy.
"Morning," he said.
"Hey, Bowen."
"I'm not being held."
"I can see that."
"I walked here. With a bag."
"I can see the bag." She looked at the shirt, then at Nathan, then back at the clipboard with an expression she was clearly trying to keep official. "You're free to go whenever you like."
