Chapter 21: Denied
The hearing was on Wednesday at nine, in the small courtroom on the second floor.
Nathan had slept two nights on Dell's couch, five hundred feet from his own front door.
He wore the suit again.
Bowen sat behind him in the gallery with Dell, and neither of them took their eyes off the back of his head.
Britt sat at the other table in a gray cardigan.
She had a tissue in her hand and a fresh bandage on her left wrist.
The judge was a heavy, tired woman who had known Nathan since his first day at the courthouse.
She read the petition in silence.
Then she looked up.
"Mrs. Sorensen. You allege Mr. Ellery stalked you at the Marlow Grange hall on Saturday night."
"Yes, Your Honor." Britt's voice shook. "He came into my private party. He stared at me across the room the whole time. I was terrified."
"Describe it."
"He was just there. I felt so unsafe."
"I'm going to call a witness," the judge said. "Deputy?"
The deputy from the welfare check stood up from the back row.
She walked to the stand and took the oath with her hat in her hand.
"Deputy, were you at the Grange hall on Saturday?"
"Yes, Your Honor. I was invited."
"By whom?"
"By Mrs. Sorensen. In the Bluebird Diner on Thursday, in front of about forty people." The deputy's voice was careful. "She said she'd invited the whole county. She also said that Mr. Sorensen would bring Mr. Ellery, because Mr. Ellery couldn't stay away."
"Those were her words?"
