Chapter 4: The Palm

I tore the notice off the nails and carried it inside.

Granger was at the table with a cup of coffee he wasn't drinking.

I put the paper down in front of him.

"You knew."

"Everybody knew. The Elders give an Acting Alpha one season. Then the heir runs or the heir is done."

"Runs what?"

"The Founders' Trail. The Lodge to the Moon Stone, twelve miles, the river and the ridge. Against whoever Jagger sends." He turned the cup a quarter turn. "In fur."

"And you can't shift."

"Not since the blade. My wolf's in there. He can't get out."

"I saw him. In the Hall."

"Then you saw all he's got."

I sat down across from him.

"So what was the plan? Before I walked down that aisle."

He was quiet for a while.

"Let it die," he said. "Quietly. Let the Elders confirm him. Sell the timber rights my father left me and go somewhere flat."

"Somewhere flat."

"Somewhere nobody's watching me get lifted onto a toilet."

I stared at him.

"You were going to let him have it," I said. "After the blade. After the crest."

"I can't prove the crest. I can't stand. What do you want me to do, Rae, crawl up the ridge on my elbows while three hundred wolves film it?"

"I want you to not quit!"

My voice cracked off the log walls.

"You said yes to me yesterday," I said. "In front of all of them. I picked you. I walked past every one of them and picked you."
