Chapter 22: His Own Funeral
I put the phone down on the sheet.
Dom stood there with the black tie hanging from his fingers.
"No," he said.
"Dom."
"I'll call the judge. He owes me."
"You'll call a judge who owes you, to tear up a warrant on your son's ex-wife, the morning of your son's funeral?" I got out of bed. "Every old man in that church would know by noon."
I took the tie out of his hand and put it around his neck.
I tied it for him, the way my father taught me on his own neck when I was twelve.
"After," I said. "Let them take me after."
Holy Rosary was full by ten-thirty.
Three hundred people, the same ones who'd watched me marry him five weeks ago.
The coffin stood closed in front of the altar, with a spray of white roses and Nicky's photograph on an easel. His wedding photo, cropped. My shoulder was still in the corner of it.
I sat in the front pew in a black dress, at Dom's right hand.
Augie sat on his left with his rosary.
