Chapter 11: Fourth of July
The district attorney's office in Sturgeon Bay was open on the Fourth of July because the district attorney was running for reelection.
He had a flag pin on his lapel and a box of parade candy on his desk.
He read the lab report twice.
Then he slid it back across the desk to Greta with two fingers.
"Ms. Lindahl," he said. "I understand why you're here."
"Good. Then reopen it."
"Let me tell you what I'm looking at." He held up one finger. "A scraping taken by the prisoner's sister, alone, with a razor from a workbench, from a boat nobody secured."
"I photographed it first. I dated the bag."
A second finger.
"A whiskey glass taken from a private dinner without the owner's knowledge."
"He left it on the table."
A third finger.
"And a no-contest plea, nine years old, that your brother entered with counsel, on the record, of his own free will."
"He was twenty. He didn't remember anything. They told him he did it."
"A defense attorney would call your evidence a family project," the DA said. "A judge would agree. I'm sorry. A private scraping by the prisoner's sister and a stolen glass don't open a closed plea."
Greta sat very still.
"His blood is on the driver's side," she said. "Not my brother's. His."
"It's his family's boat." The DA spread his hands. "Bring me something the state collected. Bring me a witness who'll change her story under oath. Then come back."
He stood up.
The meeting was over.
He offered her a piece of parade candy on the way out.
She didn't take it.
Ephraim was packed by nine that night.
Families on blankets all down the waterfront lawn, kids with glow sticks, summer people in white pants holding paper cups of cherry wine.
