Chapter 14: The Door
The guard waved Lukas forward.
He came across the room slowly, a coffee in each hand.
"I'll go," he said when he reached the table. "It's your visit."
"Sit down, Luke," Nils said.
"Nils."
"It's my visit. Sit down."
Lukas looked at Greta.
She didn't say yes and she didn't say no.
He set one coffee in front of Nils and kept the other, and sat on the third stool at the end of the table.
Nobody spoke.
A toddler at the next table was banging a plastic truck on the steel.
Nils picked up the second coffee and looked at the two cups in front of him.
"Great," he said. "Now I've got two of these. It's like Christmas in hell."
Lukas's mouth moved.
Greta didn't laugh.
She looked at her husband's hands on the table.
The hex nut was still on his ring finger.
He hadn't taken it off.
"I came to see Nils," Lukas said. "I didn't know you'd be here. But since you are, I want to say one thing, and then I'll go sit in the truck."
"Say it," Greta said.
He took a breath.
"I'm not going to apologize for the seal," he said. "I made that promise before I knew you. I'll keep it till I'm in the ground. If I broke it for you, I'd be a man who breaks it, and then nothing I ever told you would be worth anything."
"That's convenient."
"No. It's the least convenient thing in my life."
He looked at her steadily.
"Here's what I did wrong," he said. "I married you knowing there was a door in me you could never open. And I didn't tell you the door was there. I let you walk around my house thinking you'd seen every room."
Greta's throat went tight.
"You should have known before you said yes," Lukas said. "Not what's behind it. Just that it exists. I should've stood on that dock in the rain and said it. There's one thing I'll never be able to give you. You'll find out what it's about the worst possible way. I didn't. I wanted you to say yes too much."
