Chapter 15: The Swimming Dock

Greta typed her reply.

"Where?"

The answer came before she'd set the phone down.

"Our dock."

There was only one dock that meant.

The old swimming dock at the town beach in Sister Bay, where they'd learned to dive at eight.

The water was flat and black, with a skin of mist on it.

Kristi was sitting at the very end of the dock with her knees pulled up, in a gray hoodie and bare feet.

Greta walked out to her.

Kristi didn't turn around.

"You came," she said.

"You said alone. I'm alone."

"You didn't tell him?"

"Which him?"

Kristi laughed, a small, cracked sound.

She held up her left hand.

The sapphire caught the one streetlight up by the bathhouse.

"Funny thing about this ring," she said. "It's a size too big. He never had it sized. I wrap tape around the back."

Greta sat down on the boards a few feet away.

Kristi was shaking.

Greta could see it in her shoulders, a hard fine tremor.

"He told the whole town his uncle heard his confession," Kristi said. "On my engagement night. In front of my mother."

"I was there."

"He thought it was hilarious. He laughed about it the whole way home." Kristi pressed her palms against her eyes. "And then he said, if anybody goes down for that statement, it won't be me, babe. It'll be you. Lying to a deputy. He said it like he was telling me where he parked."

Greta went very still.

"What statement?" she said.

Kristi took her hands down.

She looked twelve.

"I was drunk," she said.

"I was so drunk, Gret. We all were. I'd had half a bottle of peach schnapps on the dock before we even got in the boat. I was up in the bow under the towel, like I always told you. That part was true."
