Chapter 18: Evidence
Greta read the order twice under the porch light.
Then she took out her phone and called Madison.
The clinic lawyer answered on the second ring, at eight at night, eating something crunchy.
"Read it to me," she said.
Greta read it to her.
There was a short silence.
"Oh, that's lovely," the lawyer said. "That's a gift. Don't touch the boat. Don't block the doors. Be standing on that shore at ten with your phone charged."
"Why?"
"Because tomorrow morning the district attorney is going to have a very public decision to make."
By a quarter to ten on Friday the shore below the boathouse had an audience.
Greta hadn't invited anybody.
She hadn't needed to.
The summer people from the cottages down the shore had come out with their coffee and their dogs.
The old mechanic and the apprentice sat on the yard truck's tailgate.
A woman from the county paper stood by the boathouse with a notebook, because the apprentice had called her.
"You told me to make some calls," he said.
"I meant to customers."
"She's a customer. She's got a Boston Whaler."
