Chapter 14: The Elevator

The hearing started at ten on Thursday, in the boardroom, with the blinds drawn against the river.

Honoria sat in the middle of the long table with a director on each side of her.

One of them was the man from the window seat, who had asked me why I married a stranger.

The trust's lawyer sat at the end with a laptop, and the cane lay in front of Honoria.

Truman and I sat on one side, a chair apart, because the lawyer had told us to.

Colin sat on the other, in his navy suit, with Tatum behind him in a pale pink blazer.

She had not looked at me once.

"Mr. Bierbaum has asked to present a single exhibit," said the lawyer. "The challenge is that this marriage is a staged arrangement."

"I'd like to show the panel how it began," Colin said, rising. "Not what Mrs. Shaw says happened. What happened."

He nodded at the lawyer, and the screen at the end of the room woke up.

It showed a glass elevator, from above, in gray and silver.

The time in the corner said 6:41 p.m., October 16.

Colin walked into the picture in the same suit, with Tatum laughing at his shoulder.

My stomach turned over, because I knew what night it was.

"The venue kept the camera footage," Colin said. "I asked for it. It shows who knew what, and when."

The elevator doors slid shut.
