Mated to My Step-brother and His Best Friend novel · Chapter 15 of 32

Chapter 15: Tonic

Deacon put his hand on the doorknob.

"Don't," I said.

He stopped.

"If you open that door with your eyes like that, they'll say you fought for the handler." I pulled on my jeans under the quilt. "Then you're in a cell too."

"They'll put you in the one where that man died."

"Then you'll know where to find me."

I got my shirt on.

Then I unlocked the door myself.

Four men in LOVETT SECURITY jackets filled the hall.

The one in front was big and bald, and his left ear was split down the middle.

I knew that ear.

I'd heard it described on my diner floor eight hours ago.

Deacon came up behind me, and I felt the bond go hot and red.

"You," Deacon said.

The split-eared man didn't blink.

"Acting Alpha's orders, sir," he said. "Your uncle stands for your father while he's down. You're to stay out of the hall."

"My father's not dead."

"No, sir. Not yet."

They didn't put hands on me.

They didn't have to.

I walked down the main stairs between them, and every door along the hall had a face in it.

Arlis was waiting at the bottom.

He wore a clean white shirt buttoned all the way to the throat.

"Miss Caskey," he said sadly. "You were alone with my brother in his study on Monday. The house heard you ask for him."

"I asked for his son."

"The house heard you." He nodded to the split-eared man. "The cells."

The cell was stone on three sides and bars on the fourth.

Up near the ceiling was one small barred window at the level of the grass.

There was a hook in the wall above the cot.

I didn't look at it again.

They left one man on the stairs, his back to me.

I sat on the cot with my knees up.

At eight, something blocked the light from the little window.
