Chapter 21: Drills
Nobody in the clinic looked at anybody else.
That was the worst part.
Two hundred people who'd known each other their whole lives, and every one of them wondering who in the room had taken an envelope.
One of the gravel-pit men stood up off the door table.
"Search every house," he said. "Tonight."
"And then what?" I said.
"And then we run them out."
"Then Arlis has his raiders," I said. "Just angrier."
He opened his mouth and shut it.
I climbed up on the stool where the split-eared man had sat.
My legs were still shaking from the draw.
"I know what it's like to need money," I said. "Everybody in this room does. Arlis knows it too. That's why he came here with envelopes."
Nobody said anything.
"So here's the deal," I said. "Whoever took one, bring it back. Put it in the cook's mayonnaise jar on the diner counter. Tonight. No name, no questions."
"And then?" the cook said.
"And then they stand on that bridge with us instead."
The next morning the mayonnaise jar was full.
