Chapter 22: The Panel
"A prisoner," my mother said. "Abner, what do you mean?"
"He took my phone. This is the doctor's." Abner breathed hard. "She's at the door. Listen. He wants me dead the night before the moon."
"Dead how?"
"Silver. In my sleep. Then he tells the pack the girl's poison finished me." His voice cracked. "And he rides on Graylick with my death in his pocket."
Somebody spoke in the background, sharp and low.
"Sherry," Abner said. "Tell my son..."
The line went dead.
My mother sat staring at the phone in the cornbread.
Then Deacon stood up.
"I'm going to get him," he said.
"We're going," I said.
He turned to me.
"You're banished. If you set foot on the Ridge, you're anybody's."
"So are you. You're rogue now."
"Dovie."
"Lesson one," I said. "Who decides how it goes?"
He looked at me for a long moment.
"You do," he said.
"So I'm going. You need me if he's sick, and you know it."
Bowie was already putting on his coat.
"Not the road," he said. "The gate's Arlis's men. The road's Arlis's men."
