Chapter 26: Dark

Brand came up the ladder behind me with his shirt on inside out.

He looked at my face, then at the cloud.

"How long?"

"Three days. Four if we're lucky."

"You said five weeks."

"I was wrong."

He stood there a moment with the wind in his hair.

Then he put his hand on the back of my neck, warm, and kept it there.

"Then we've got three days," he said. "Tell me what to do."

Gran banged her pot lid at sunrise and didn't stop until the whole town was at the pump.

I stood on the oil drum.

"The storm's coming early," I said. "Three days. When it hits, Haven's shield goes."

"The dome runs from the first wind. All of you sleep under it. Nobody outside the wall after dark."

Nobody laughed. Nobody had laughed at that drum in two years.

"And Haven?" the old salvage man said.

"Haven gets told," I said. "Every way we've got."

Sable's workshop became a radio station by noon.

She patched into every trading post channel between here and the Gate.

She found the Haven public band, the one the Council used for weather notices, and broke into it with a cable and a curse.
