Chapter 21: Kneel

The word rolled over the church yard.

I saw it hit the packs.

The Alphas of Rio Pueblo and Cañon went down on their knees in the lime, gray-faced, with their hands flat on the ground.

The benches emptied of standing wolves one row at a time.

Black Lake went down all at once.

Two hundred people dropped in a body, mothers pulling children down with them, hunters still holding their rifles.

The Reader went down on her old knees with her mouth set in a hard line.

Even my aunt in her fur-collared coat sank to the dirt, with a small sound.

Only two of us were left on our feet.

Mateo stood in the middle of the lime ring, naked and unbent.

The corners of his mouth lifted in something that was not a smile.

He was a rogue, and the voice of an Alpha who was not his had no handle on him.

And I stood beside him, with my aunt's coat across my shoulders and the blood drying behind my ear.

The voice hit me too.

I felt it come, the old familiar weight.

I felt it find the place in me where it had always found the knees.

It found nothing.

She was awake in there.

I felt her lift her head, and the voice slid down my spine and off me.
