Chapter 17: What She Wants

I stitched him up myself on the boathouse couch.

The lodge medic had offered, and I had told her to go away.

I wanted my hands on the wound, and I wanted him to see that I did.

"Hold still," I said.

"I am holding still."

"You're breathing at me."

"It's a habit."

The needle went through the edge of the long red line on his ribs, and he didn't make a sound.

Lantern light slid over his shoulders.

He was thirty-one, and he sat there waiting for a sentence, with his hands open on his knees.

I tied the last knot and bit the thread.

"There," I said.

Neither of us moved.

"You said I could name the price," I said.

"I never said that."

"You thought it. It's all over your face."

A corner of his mouth lifted.

"I did."

"Then listen, because I'm only going to say this once."

I put the needle down.

My hands were not steady, and I let him see that too.

"I'm not here because you bled," I said. "I'm not here because the Well wants me, or because I'm afraid of it."

"Juniper."

"I haven't finished."
