Chapter 18: Blood Moon Run
The ridge above Cinder Lake looked like a black wave about to break.
By dusk the women who were left stood on the gravel at the foot of it.
We wore gray robes, with silver bracelets locked on our wrists.
Nine of us, and the moon already pale in the sky.
Delphine climbed onto a flatbed truck with a microphone.
She looked as perfect as ever, and she did not mention the night before.
She did not mention Hiram, or the stream, or fifteen million viewers.
"Ladies, the final trial," she said, with a smile like glass.
"The Blood Moon Run. Seven miles across the ridge, in your wolf shape, to the lit stone on the far side."
"What are the rules?" asked a woman near me.
"Be there before the moon clears the pines."
Beside the truck stood two rows of men in black, with dart rifles over their shoulders and a line of quad bikes behind them.
"Our security will accompany you," said Delphine. "For your safety."
A hush went through the nine.
