Chapter 13: Count Backward

The man in the scrubs said it again, slowly and louder.

"Mr. Brunetti said she wouldn't wake up with her memories."

The door opened before he finished.

Two of Vincent's men came in from the hall, and they had both heard the second time.

"Take him," Vincent said, without turning around. "Not to the police. The Tower, the sub-basement. Nobody calls anyone."

The man went out between them, and he did not look back at me.

The room was quiet after that.

My heart was going fast, and I made myself breathe.

"He's a dock hand," I said. "Aldo will say he's never seen him."

"He'll say it with a smile," Vincent said. "I know."

"Then what was that for?"

"For me." He sat on the edge of my bed. "I needed to hear it said in somebody's mouth."

He took my hand.

"Aldo knows what day this is now. He knows we lied to the lamp."

"Because his man didn't come back."

"Because his man didn't come back," Vincent agreed. "We can move you to another hospital or we can go ahead."

I looked at the clock.

It said 3:40.

Every day I waited, the tumor pressed a little harder on the part of me that held words.

"We go ahead," I said.

"Gemma."
