Chapter 19: Three Years
The muzzle of the Don's pistol pressed against the front of Gemma's coat.
"Move," Vittorio said.
"No."
"He burned my captain's trust and killed nineteen of my men on this pier, and he takes breath on my dock."
"He's worth more alive than the dock," Gemma said.
Floodlights hissed overhead, and a gull screamed somewhere over the water.
Raffaele stepped up beside her and stood very close, bleeding through his shirt.
"Father. Lower it."
"You too?"
"I'm with my wife."
Vittorio's eyes went from one to the other.
He was smiling, but the cane in his left hand had begun to shake.
"The Orsatti took four Albertini berths this week," Gemma said. "Albertini Freight is your merger, Don Vittorio. It's yours. It's sitting under their guns."
"Shoot this man and his father takes the rest of the harbor in a week. Keep him breathing, and he trades it back to you."
"The Orsatti don't trade."
"They do when their heir has a bullet in his leg."
She turned and crouched beside the heir, who lay on the concrete, gray and sweating.
"Your father's name is on a number in your pocket," she said. "Call him."
The man laughed, weakly.
"Why would I?"
"Because I'm the only person on this pier who won't let you die for free."
He stared at her.
Then he dug out a phone with a bloody hand and dialed.
It rang four times, and a rasping old voice answered in Sicilian.
Gemma took the phone out of the heir's fingers.
"Orsatti. I am Raffaele Sandrelli's wife. Your son is on my pier with a bullet in his leg and nineteen of your men dead behind him."
