Chapter 25: Read It Out
Gemma threw herself sideways out of the chair, and the gun went off over her head.
The bullet hit the chandelier.
Crystal came down across the table and the plates.
A captain's wine glass burst, and somebody swore.
Raffaele was already moving.
He caught his father's wrist with both hands and wrenched it up and back.
The Don cried out, and the pistol dropped and skidded under the sideboard.
Raffaele put him face down on the dark wood, with an arm twisted behind his back.
"Guards!" Vittorio shouted.
Four of his men raised their guns.
Four more chairs scraped, and the captains stood with pistols in their hands.
The captain with the scarred knuckles walked around the table and set his muzzle against the head of the biggest guard.
"Think about it," he said.
Nobody fired.
The guard looked at his Don, flat on the table with glass in his silver hair, and then he looked at eleven armed men.
He lowered his gun.
The other three lowered theirs.
Gemma got up from the floor with a cut on her palm and the letter still in her fist.
"Gemma," Raffaele said, with his knee in his father's back. "Are you hurt?"
"No."
"Then say it. They're waiting."
She stepped up to the head of the table, where the glass lay thickest, and unfolded the pages.
The eleven men watched her.
"My mother wrote this ten years ago," she said. "Nobody here has heard it. I'll read what concerns you."
Her voice shook, and she let it.
"Vittorio Sandrelli has been washing money through the Albertini freight company for twelve years. Three hundred million dollars of it. Some of it belongs to dead men's widows."
