Chapter 8: Say It Again

"Lena," Stanley said. "You weren't invited."

"I never am," she said, "and I come anyway. Don't I, Justin?"

Justin said nothing.

Lena cut the pie with a silver knife and set a slice in front of each of us.

She took the last one for herself.

"I'll be brief," she said. "I'm here because of Carol."

Mom lifted her chin.

"What about Carol?"

"Thursday afternoon, Carol brought her daughter to our clinic. Room three."

"The door was shut for forty minutes, and that room is for a ten-minute exam."

She laid her tablet beside the pie.

She turned it so everyone could see the highlighted row.

"Lena, put that away," Stanley said.

"I think the family should know what Justin does with patients."

Justin's chair scraped back.

"That's enough."

"Does he do it to all of them, Susanna?" Lena said, sweetly. "Or only the pretty ones? Last year there was a woman with a mother in the waiting room too."
