Chapter 15: Nine Million Dollars
Mr. Tull's lawyer did not come in.
He stood in the stairwell above the laundromat and passed an embossed card through the gap in the door.
"Tomorrow, nine o'clock, the Tull Capital boardroom," he said. "Mr. Tull would like to settle the Rudd matter privately. He says you'll want to hear it."
"Bring my wife," Ethan said.
The lawyer hesitated.
"The offer is for you, Mr. Rudd."
"Then I'll bring my wife."
The lawyer left.
I lay back on the bed, and Ethan sat down beside me with the card in his fingers.
"He's going to offer you something," I said.
"Yes."
"What will you say?"
"You'll hear it."
The Tull Capital boardroom was on the fortieth floor, a long glass room with a dozen men and women at the table.
Grayson's father sat at the head.
He was sixty, silver, with a calm voice and rings on two fingers.
Grayson sat three seats down with a gray face and did not look at me.
"Mr. Rudd," the old man said. "Mrs. Rudd. Please."
He gestured to two chairs.
We stayed standing.
"I'll be brief," Mr. Tull said. "Your father and I knew each other. I regret how it ended."
"You regret it," Ethan said.
"I do. Tull Capital would like to make it right. The firm that was dissolved was worth, at the time, about nine million dollars. I will restore your father's share in full, in cash, with interest. A public retraction of the gambling story. His name cleared."
A board member shifted in his seat.
Ethan said nothing.
"In return," Mr. Tull said, "you sign a release on every claim against the Penhallows and against me, and you end this marriage. You are a young man. Your wife is a decent girl, but she carries a name that will drag you down."
