Chapter 16: The Ring in the Glass
I did not hide.
Beatrice told me to stay in the attic and let her lawyers handle it.
Ethan told me he would burn the gossip account to the ground by morning.
I said no to both.
"They want me ashamed," I said. "I'm not going to be ashamed. I'm going to be loud."
At four that afternoon a man knocked on the flat door.
It was Grayson's driver, the one who had told Ethan about the apartment on Fulton.
He wore a cap and held it in both hands.
"Mrs. Rudd, I'm not supposed to be here. I've driven Mr. Grayson six years."
"What do you have?"
"His old phone. He gave it to me to wipe, and I couldn't make myself." He held it out. "There's a voicemail on it from your mother. And something he sent from an account last night."
I took the phone.
I played the voicemail once, standing in the doorway, and my stomach turned over.
It was my mother's voice, brisk and warm, giving Grayson his orders for the night she named the guard.
At the end of it she told him to say he knew nothing.
Then the second file.
It was a screenshot of the gossip account's login, with Grayson's email on it.
Ethan read it over my shoulder.
"Tonight," he said quietly. "Where is he?"
"The Tull tower roof," the driver said. "His engagement party. The new girl's family."
I knew who she was.
The heiress's father owned half the downtown towers.
I looked down at the dress I'd borrowed from Beatrice, a plain black one.
"Put me on that roof," I said.
