Chapter 13: The Diner
Spence crossed the basement without taking his eyes off Bennet.
He stopped close enough to smell the powder on Bennet's coat.
"Who are you?" he said quietly.
"Alana's husband."
"She called you sir."
"She's polite."
Spence looked at the lead inspector, who was packing her hard case and not looking at anyone.
Then he looked back at Bennet, and I watched him decide something.
"Celine," he said. "We're leaving."
Celine went up the stairs after him with her dead phone in her hand.
She didn't film anything on the way out.
The diner on Main Street served pancakes until two on Saturdays, and my grandmother had wanted pancakes since Christmas.
So at ten the next morning the three of us were in the back booth under the plastic holly.
Grandma ordered blueberry with extra butter and told the waitress to bring Bennet the same.
"I don't like blueberries," he said.
"You will today," she said.
The bell over the door rang.
Deena came in first, in her camel coat, and Celine came in after her.
Spence came in last and held the door for nobody.
The diner was full.
