Chapter 19: Midsummer Eve
Midsummer Eve came in warm and gold, and the whole city smelled of cut roses and hot wax.
I wore the dark green dress, the one Rosamund had been wearing when I woke up.
Betsy had rebuilt it from the hem up, and it fit me better than it had ever fit her.
"You look like a bank," Betsy said, with deep admiration.
"Thank you. Is the healer in place?"
"Behind the third pillar, with a bag and a very bad temper."
"Good."
Hadrian offered me his arm at the foot of the palace stairs, in his black marshal's coat with the silver seal at his throat.
"You are certain of the cup," he said.
"The red band. The dose is small, and the healer says it will make him ill for a day and nothing worse."
"I am not certain I like it."
"You don't have to like it," I said. "You have to stand next to me."
