Chapter 22: The Preservation Order
The federal courthouse on Dearborn Street seats eighty in Courtroom 2108, and on Monday morning four hundred people stood outside it in the cold.
They stood in a line down the plaza in their church clothes and flannel and Sox jackets.
Their rifles were locked in church vans three blocks away.
Inside, the judge was seventy, with a cough drop in his cheek and the patience of a man who had read every page.
The lawyer in the silver tie rose first.
"Your Honor, Section Nine of the Fissure Response Act vests exclusive custody of biological material of fissure origin in the Bureau," he said.
"The county's subpoena has no standing."
The county's lawyer rose second, a short woman who had been up all weekend.
"Your Honor, a human body is not material of fissure origin," she said. "It is a decedent under the Illinois Coroner Act."
The judge looked at me over his glasses.
"Dr. Mroz. If I order that facility opened, what will I find in it?"
"Two hundred and twelve bodies with dental work, Your Honor," I said. "I can show the court a molar."
I had the ring in a clear bag on the table, a plain gold band engraved T+L 10-12-02.
