Chapter 24: Pair

The call came at 11:58 on Thanksgiving night, from the woman who tended bar on Jefferson Street in Joliet.

"We've got two, Doc," she said.

"They came up in the lot at 11:30, and we put them down."

"They're in the walk-in with the beer."

"Don't let the crew tag them," I said.

"The crew's here. I told them we tag our own."

I was there by 1:10, with Reiss driving and the card in my pocket.

Fifty regulars stood in the lot under the neon in their coats, with deer rifles in the truck racks, and nobody was drinking.

The Cook crew's pickup sat at the lot's edge with its orange light bar dark and three orange vests leaning on it.

Their new lead looked at the laminated card the bartender held up, read all four signatures, and spat his gum into a napkin.

"Gary to Kankakee," he said. "Joliet's inside that."

"It is, hon," she said.

The walk-in sat behind the bar between the kegs, thirty-six degrees, and two folds lay on the concrete floor on a sheet of plywood.

They lay side by side, a bull and a cow, as the bar had already started calling them, and their left forelimbs were touching.

A big man in a roofer's jacket stood at the door of the walk-in with his hands hanging, and he was crying without any noise.

"I shot the first," he said to me. "He lifted his hand to the door, Doc. I swear to God he lifted a hand."
