Chapter 19: The Plate Returns

I walked down the center aisle with three packs watching and the iron keys cold in my hand.

Cedric turned.

I saw the effort it cost him not to run to me.

"Luna Bradford," said Ashgrove's Alpha, with no expression. "You may speak."

I stopped beside him and faced the head table.

"You laughed at my plate in this hall, Alpha of Wyndham," I said.

He stopped grinning.

I crossed to his place and laid a paper receipt in front of him, soft from being folded and unfolded.

"Read the total aloud. That is the theft."

He cleared his throat.

"Fourteen dollars," he said.

The hall was so quiet I could hear my own breathing.

"The Moot may sentence me for fourteen dollars," I said. "Now it can hear what the Beta took."

I turned to the gallery.

"Holly Orr, the Redhollow cook."

Holly came down the stair with a box in her arms.

She set the box on the head table and took out a ledger page.

"Every line carries the Beta's initials," she said. "The last deposit cleared the morning of the feast."

Ashgrove's Alpha picked it up and read it.

"Thirty thousand dollars, near enough," she said.

"Twenty-nine thousand four hundred," I said. "The Alpha paid it back from his own pocket. I'd like Philippa to pay him."

Holly took out a second sheet, with a smear of blood in one corner.

"The ration order. The real one is signed by Cedric, and says double portions and meat every meal. This one was written a week later. It halves the Luna's food."

"That is my signature," Cedric said. "I never wrote it."
