Chapter 5: Kai's Phone

We never left the house.

Bram wanted to.

"You're six months pregnant with four broken fingers," he whispered under the stairs. "I'm not leaving you in a house full of people who want you dead."

"Nobody is in the house. They're all at the hall."

"Felicity is coming back."

"Then I'll be somewhere she won't look."

I knew the study had a window seat with a heavy green curtain.

I had hidden behind it once, at nineteen, to cry through a funeral.

Bram looked at the curtain, at me and at the window.

"Ten minutes," he said. "If he touches you, I come through the glass."

"If he touches me, I'll be doing the touching."

He almost smiled.

Then he was gone, a big shadow slipping out the kitchen door toward the river.

I got behind the curtain and settled onto the cushion with my knees pulled up as far as my belly would let me.

My son rolled once and settled.

I waited for two hours.

The wake ended.

Cars started, doors slammed and the house filled with the sound of pack wolves who didn't want to go home.

Then there was a long quiet, and the front door opened and shut.

Heavy footsteps crossed the hall and came into the study.

I held my breath.

Through a gap in the curtain I saw Cormac drop into the leather chair behind his desk.

He still wore his funeral coat.

He sat with his elbows on his knees and his head in his hands for so long that my foot went to sleep.

Then he reached into his pocket and took out a phone.

It was small and scratched, with a cracked corner and a sticker on the back that had worn to a smear.

Kai's.

I had seen it twice in two years, both times by accident.
