Glory read it.
I watched her lips move on the words.
Tell Glory I love her.
She read it again.
"Nobody's here but me and the Alpha," Glory said out loud. "He was alone. He knew he was alone."
"Yes," Gunnar said.
She didn't turn around.
She reached out and touched the gray words on the screen with one chewed fingertip.
"I want to hear it," she said.
"You don't have to."
"I know." Her voice shook. "I want to hear his voice. I don't remember it. I tried, and I don't."
I looked at Gunnar.
He pulled out the chair on her left and sat down.
I took the one on her right.
Glory put her hand flat on the table between us, and I put mine over it.
After a second, Gunnar put his over both.
Glory pressed play.
There was wind first. Loud, roaring wind across the phone.
Then a man's voice, low and quick and a little out of breath.
"Hey, babe. It's me. I know you can't hear this."
Glory's hand jerked under mine.
"Colt's not at the gap. Nobody's here but me and the Alpha. Something's moving on the Idaho side. A lot of somethings."
