Two hundred wolves followed his eyes to me.
I felt every one of them land.
Seven years ago a dying Alpha had handed me to his son with a pen.
Two months ago that son had handed me to his uncle with a microphone.
Now a whole pack was waiting to see if the uncle would hand me a crown.
I shook my head at him. Just once.
Gunnar saw it.
He turned back to the eldest of the council.
"Ask me tomorrow," he said.
A murmur went around the Ring.
"Tomorrow?"
"I've been handed one seat in my life," Gunnar said. "I don't want the next one handed to me at a fight with a woman on top of it like a ribbon."
He walked across the Ring in his borrowed coat and stopped in front of me at the rope.
"You pick where you stand first," he said quietly. "Then I'll pick."
The eldest looked at the two of us for a long time.
Then she banged her gavel on the stone.
"Tomorrow," she said. "Noon. The great hall."
Fern drove the kids home in her hatchback, because Glory refused to get in a truck with a man wearing nothing but a barn coat.
