Chapter 30: Three More
"Gunnar," I said.
He came out of the kitchen with a spatula and looked where I was looking.
The gold came up in his eyes so fast I felt it in my teeth.
"Stay in the house," he said.
"We've done this before. I don't stay in the house."
He almost smiled. "Bring the maul, then."
We walked down the drive together.
The pickup sat at the gate with its engine running.
Nobody got out.
Then the driver's door opened, and Roxanne Vail climbed down in a dirty cream coat.
No lipstick. Her hair was flat on one side.
She didn't look at me.
She looked at Gunnar.
"Alpha," she said. "I need to ask your Luna something."
"Ask her," Gunnar said. "She's standing right here."
Roxanne looked at me then.
"Can you open the back?" she said. "My hands are shaking too much."
I went around the truck and lifted the canopy door.
Three kids were sitting in the bed on a pile of moving blankets.
Two boys and a girl. Maybe ten, eleven, twelve.
