Chapter 7: The Ladder
"That's eight," I said.
Gunnar went still with the cup at his mouth.
He didn't turn around.
"You counted."
"Four last night. Eight tonight. You said too much kills."
"Eight doesn't."
"How do you know?"
"Because I've done eight before."
He drank it. All of it.
Then he set the cup down and wiped his wet wrists on his jeans.
I put the chili on the feed bin next to the bottle, hard enough to make it jump.
"Talk to me."
"Eat your dinner, Bryn."
"It's your dinner. And I'm not leaving this barn until you tell me why you drink poison in front of my kids' house."
"They're asleep."
"Gunnar."
It was the first time I'd said his name to his face.
He heard it. I watched him hear it.
He leaned forward with his elbows on his knees and looked at the floor.
"Every wolf has a rank," he said. "You know that."
"I'm not a pup."
"A pack follows the strongest wolf it can feel. Not the one with the title. The strongest."
"So?"
"So mine's stronger than Colt's."
The barn was quiet except for one of the calves shifting in the straw.
"It has been since he was a kid," Gunnar said. "When my brother died, the whole pack started turning to me. In the hall. At the funeral. Wolves I'd known all my life, waiting for me to tell them what to do."
"And you didn't want it."
"It wasn't mine."
"Why not?"
"Because two alphas can't hold one pack. If my wolf wakes up all the way, the pack splits down the middle. Half follow the seat. Half follow the nose. Somebody ends up in the Ring at the full moon, and somebody ends up dead."
