Chapter 15: Not Torin's

Fern's POV

He told me in the truck, with the heater roaring and his eyes on the dark road.

He told me about the letter, the strip, the price.

Then he told me the rest, and it was worse than the letter.

"I was afraid of your feet," he said.

"My feet."

"You stood still today. I still couldn't make myself believe it was over." He shook his head. "I've seen a cut bond pull people back. I thought you might not know it was still there." His jaw tightened. "I wanted him out of the chair before he could call you."

"So you decided I couldn't stand to hear it."

"I decided I couldn't stand to watch you get dragged back."

I turned that over.

It was a stupid reason, and it was also the first time anyone had stood between me and the road without ordering me which way to go.

"You don't get to pick what I can carry," I said.

"No."

"If you hide something from me again, I'll walk out of your lodge, and I won't wake you to tell you."

"Understood."

"And you owe me an hour in front of the Elders when it's time."

"You'll have it."

He drove the rest of the way in silence, and I let him.

We were home by nine.

The lodge was warm, the cook had left a pot on the stove, and I could not eat.

I stood at the big front window with my arms wrapped around myself.

Across the river, very faint, a howl went up.

It was Torin's.

I would have known it anywhere, long and cracked and rising at the end into a question.

Behind me Kurt went still.

I felt him not move.

Inside me Sorrel lifted her head, listened, and turned away from the sound.

She looked back over her shoulder at the man behind me.

That was all.

No pull, no tug at my feet, no coldness in my throat.

I stood at the glass, listening to the man who had once commanded me, and I felt nothing but a mild sadness for him.
