Chapter 23: What Torin Told Kurt

Kurt's POV

He was waiting on my porch when we got home, sitting on the top step in the dusk with his gauzed hands hanging between his knees.

I had expected him to be there since the clinic lot.

Fern stood beside me in the truck's headlights, and I felt her go still.

"I'll talk to him," I said.

"I should."

"You've talked to him enough this month." I turned her face toward me with two fingers. "Go in. Eat something. I'll come when he's done."

She looked at Torin for a long moment.

Then she went up the steps past him without a word, and he did not lift his head, and the door shut behind her.

I sat down on the second step, one stair below him, with my elbows on my knees.

For a while neither of us spoke.

The river ran loud in the dark below the lodge.

"You'll want to hit me," said Torin.

"I've wanted to hit you since the Gathering."

"I'd let you."

"I know. That's why I won't."

He nearly laughed.

It was an ugly, dry sound, and it didn't turn into anything.

"I read the ledger," he said. "I read it three times in the car. I drove here with my eyes shut for the last mile."

"Why here?"

"Because she's here. And you're the only man in either pack I can say this to."

"Say it."

He stared out at the river.

"I smelled nothing on her at the Gathering," he said.

My hands closed.

"I stood next to Margo in front of two hundred wolves, and I put my palm on her stomach, and I smelled nothing. No pup. No sour milk, no heat. Nothing. I'm an Alpha. I have a nose."
