Chapter 27: What Winning Costs
Kurt's POV
I watched Margo go out of the east gate at midnight.
She walked between two wardens with the blanket held shut at her throat and her bare feet in a stranger's boots.
At the gate she turned and looked back at the lit windows of the packhouse.
Nobody called to her.
The wardens shut the iron behind her, and the sound of it carried across the whole courtyard.
I stood on the packhouse steps and waited to feel that we had won.
What I felt was tired.
The young mother and her daughter had been put in the clinic with a hot water bottle and Dessa's best blankets.
The pack had gone home in clumps, quiet, to check their own children's rooms.
Torin had said his piece to the Elders in a flat voice, laid his chair ring on the old man's notebook, and walked out into the dark alone on the north road.
Fern had not watched him go.
She had stood in the kitchen with a mug in her hands and said, to no one, that she was not hungry.
I found her there at two, in the dark, with the mug cold.
"You should sleep," I said.
"I will."
"You said that at midnight."
She almost smiled.
She was still in the wet coat, and her knees were red where she had knelt.
"They're all so kind to me now," she said. "The woman with the tin. The wardens. The old elder called me Luna four times."
"They owe you."
"They owe me nothing. I didn't do it for them." She looked down into the mug. "I did it for my pup. And the pup's not here, and I knelt there and said the word, and it didn't give the pup back."
