Chapter 28: Chosen
Wyatt was standing just inside the trees, where the bridge road went into the pines.
He didn't say anything about what he'd heard.
He held out his hand, and I took it, and we walked up the road to the truck like that.
It was the second time I'd held his hand.
I noticed I was counting.
The snow went off the ridge in the last week of February.
It went all at once, in a warm wind, and the river came up brown and loud and full of branches.
My son got big enough that I slept sitting up.
The healer let the doctor walk to the kitchen with his hands in clean gauze.
On the first of March she spoke to him for the first time.
"Salt," she said, and he passed it.
On the sixth of March I worked a day in the infirmary.
The boy with the fossil came in with a splinter.
His arm had healed straight in December, and he showed me how far he could throw now.
He knocked the willow bark jar off the windowsill.
When he'd gone, I sat on the infirmary bed and looked at the window where the Redmoor wolves had stood in the snow.
Five months ago I'd crawled into this room on somebody else's blanket.
Now the window was open, and the room smelled like mud and pine and the healer's soap.
My wolf was lying in me with her chin on her paws, waiting.
She'd been waiting since the first snow.
She'd never once pushed.
Neither had he.
That night I didn't go to the room off the healer's kitchen.
I went up the back stairs of the pack house to the end of the hall, where the light was on under his door.
I knocked once.
He opened it with a pen still in his hand.
The butcher paper was spread on his desk behind him.
The doctor's name had a line through it now.
So did Lacey's real dates.
So did my mother.
Two lines were left.
Proof of who filled the tin.
May. The bridge.
He looked at me in the doorway.
"Something wrong?"
"No."
He waited.
"I'm not here because of May," I said. "Or because I need a pack. Or because he's coming."
"All right."
"I'm here because I've been counting the times I held your hand."
Something went still in his face.
"I'm choosing," I said. "If you still want to be chosen."
He put the pen down on the desk.
He did it carefully.
"Brynn," he said. "I've wanted it since the bridge."
"I know."
"Say it once more."
"I choose you."
He crossed the room.
He put both hands on my face, the way he had in the snow, and he kissed me, and this time he didn't stop.
