Chapter 35: Half Up Front

"The wrong way," I said.

"Don't make it a story, Brynn." Lacey closed her eyes. "I was in pain. I turned the wheel."

"When did she pay you?"

"April."

She told it to the ceiling, flat.

A motel off the interstate in Idaho, the kind with the doors facing the parking lot.

The greenhouse money gone by Easter.

A knock on the door one night, and Garrett's mother standing there in her camel coat with a box of grocery-store doughnuts.

"Twenty thousand," Lacey said. "Ten then. Ten when I put the baby in her arms."

"And then?"

"And then I go to Seattle, and nobody there knows my face."

She opened her eyes.

"She said she'd raise her right. A Rhodes girl, in a real house. She said it like she was doing me a favor."

The baby in the bassinet started to cry.

It was a thin, cross cry, not loud yet.

Lacey didn't turn her head.

"She's hungry," I said.

"Then feed her."

"I can't feed her. You can."

"I'm not feeding it."

The door opened, and my mother came in with a warm bottle in one hand and a dish towel over her shoulder.

Wyatt's Beta had driven to the all-night store in Larch Falls at six.

He'd come back with two cans of formula and a face.

My mother lifted the baby out of the bassinet.

She sat down in the chair by the window with her and put the bottle to her mouth.
