Chapter 5: Since When

"Don't be scared, Asher."

Evangeline's voice was pure honey.

"Kitty is three years old. That makes her your big sister."

"She's Auntie Evangeline's favorite. Give her a hug. Don't be rude. You'll scare her with all that crying."

Asher yanked his hands back against his chest.

He was allergic to cat fur. He had been since the day he was born. One touch and his skin broke out in hives.

His throat was already blotchy red.

He was gasping between sobs.

The cat twisted in Evangeline's hands and lashed out.

Its claws raked across my son's cheek.

Three thin red lines.

He screamed.

"Oh, you scared Kitty," Evangeline cooed.

They were fixed on my son.

"Get your hands off him!"

My voice didn't sound like me.

"Who let you near my pup?"

Evangeline jumped.

I was across the room before she could stand.

My fangs were already dropping. My fingers were already curling.

I was an arm's length from the crate when a pair of arms locked around my waist from behind.

I was dragged backward off my feet.

Bowen.

"Whoa. Whoa, Elodie. Easy."

His voice was calm. Almost amused.

"Evangeline's just being nice. She wanted him to have some playmates."

I twisted in his arms.

My eyes burned red at the edges.

I got one hand free and slapped him across the face as hard as I could.

The crack echoed off the glass walls.
