Chapter 10: The Help Is Off the Clock

I found him in his office at midnight, with the safe open and six slivers of silver laid out on a handkerchief.

He looked up when I came in.

He didn't say anything about the belt.

I hadn't said anything about it either, for two days.

"I couldn't sleep," I said.

"Neither could I."

I shut the door behind me and leaned on it.

"Tiffany wants to see these," I said. "Alone, and without telling Corbin."

"I know. I read the text over your shoulder at breakfast. I'm sorry."

"No, you aren't."

"No." The corner of his mouth moved. "I'm not."

I crossed the room.

The lamp made a warm circle on the desk, and I put my hand flat inside it, next to the silver.

"I spent four years waiting for a man to notice me," I said. "I'm tired of waiting."

He stood up slowly.

"Anneliese."

"Say it."

"Terms," he said, and his voice had gone rough. "Nobody touches you unless you say so. I wrote that rule."

"You did."

"I was told the Alpha doesn't touch the help."

"The help is off the clock."

He laughed, once, under his breath.

I took hold of the front of his shirt and pulled him down, and I said it against his mouth.

"Touch me."

He kissed me with five years of holding back behind it.

It was hot and slow and then not slow at all.

His hand came up into my hair and tipped my head, and his other arm went around my back and lifted me against him.

My feet left the floor.

I wound my arms around his neck, and I felt the whole long hard length of him against my stomach and my thighs.

"God," he said into my mouth. "Tell me if it's too much."

"It's not enough."

He made a noise I felt in my ribs.

He set me on the edge of the desk.

The silver chimed in its handkerchief, and he swept it aside without looking.
