Chapter 14: The Night at the Creek

Anneliese's POV

Corbin crossed the hall to me while three hundred wolves watched him do it.

He stopped an arm's length away and did not come closer.

"She said to ask you who pulled you out," he said. "I don't know what she means."

"I do."

I hadn't thought about that night in a year.

It was September, two years ago, and still warm enough for a T-shirt.

I had gone to the creek below the pack house at dusk to pick blackberries for Corbin's birthday pie.

Something hit me from behind, high on the right side, and the pain was white and total.

I remember the water in my mouth.

I remember a hand under my arm, and a voice saying, "Hold on, hold on, I've got you."

It was Tiffany, and she had been wearing gloves.

They were thick leather work gloves, though it was seventy degrees out.

She said later that she had been in her garden when she heard me scream.

I had been grateful to her for two years.

"She pulled me out," I said. "She called you from the bank. She was the first one there."

"She was," Corbin said slowly. "She was soaked to the waist."

"I never saw the rogue."

"Nobody did. We hunted him for a month."

Neither of us said the next thing.

Across the hall, Tiffany's cardigan went out the side door, and Tobias followed her with his jaw set and his jacket zipped to the chin.
