Chapter 24: The Wolf Who Walked
A year to the day after the marker stone, Ruth pulled herself up on a chair leg in Ewan's kitchen.
She did it for a dropped spoon, in front of the whole family.
Then she sat down hard on the floor with an expression of deep betrayal.
Everyone cheered anyway.
The aunt had cooked for two days.
There was a roast, and a pot of beans, and enough potatoes to feed all of Redwood.
Tobias arrived first, with his jacket unzipped for once.
He had been Alpha for ten months, and he had finally stopped looking behind him for someone to ask.
"Redwood's fine," he said, before I could. "The north timber is ours, the ford is quiet, and the Black Pine Alpha sends a Christmas card, God help me."
"He does not."
"He signs it 'respectfully.' It's worse."
I laughed, and he handed me a folded paper from his pocket.
"A postcard," he said. "For you. It came to the pack house."
It had a picture of a highway diner in another state on the front.
On the back, in a hand I knew, one line: I hope the baby is well.
There was no name, and no return address.
I read it twice, and I held it over the stove.
"Anneliese," Tobias said, uncertain.
"It's fine." I let the corner catch and dropped it in the sink.
"Tiffany's a rumor now," I said. "Somebody saw her waiting tables near the Nevada line. No pack would take her."
"Do you want to know more?"
"No," I said. "I have a kitchen full of people."
Corbin came at six.
He knocked, as he did every Tuesday, and he waited for the six-year-old to open the door.
