Chapter 13: Her Terms

I looked at the Alpha of Stonebrook on his knees, and I did not feel clean.

I felt tired all the way down to my bones.

"Get up," I said.

"No."

"Get up, Tobias. I'm not going to sit in a bed and watch you grovel."

He rose slowly and stood with his hands open at his sides.

I wrapped the sheet around me and stood too, so my eyes were level with his chin.

"You said you answer to me," I said. "Then here is the price."

He nodded once.

"You don't touch me. Not my hand, not my hair, not my back when I'm crying."

His jaw worked, and he nodded again.

"You don't bite me. You don't mark me, and you don't ask for it, however loud the bond gets."

"Done."

"You don't tell the pack I'm yours. I'm nobody's."

"Done."

"And at the Moot, you say every name."

His eyes closed.

"All thirty-four," I said. "In your own voice, in front of the seven Alphas, with no lawyer and no Emmett at your shoulder."

"I don't know all the names," he said.

"Then you'll learn them."

"I will."

"And you don't get to feel better afterward," I said. "That isn't what this is for."

"I know," he said. "I'd think less of you if it were."

I hated that he said the right thing.

I hated that my wolf wanted to lick his wounded hand.

I got dressed with my back to him, and I did not look around until my boots were laced.

He was still standing in the middle of the floor, naked and very still.

"Put on some pants," I said. "Odessa needs to hear this from you."
