My Alpha's Betrayal: Burning in the Flames of His Vengeance novel · Chapter 14 of 24

Chapter 14: The Challenge

Emmett called the pack to the yard at sundown, and two hundred wolves came.

They stood in a ring around the mud where I had thrown the fence-post warrior, six weeks and a lifetime ago.

Tobias stood on the hall porch with his boots off the rail this time.

I stood at the foot of the steps with my hand on the fox in my pocket.

Emmett walked into the middle of the ring in his good black coat and turned slowly so everyone could see his face.

"I have served this pack for twenty years," he said. "I have never raised my voice against my Alpha."

Nobody spoke.

"I raise it now," he said. "Because the woman at his door is not who she says."

A hum ran through the crowd.

"Her name is not Lena Hart. She was born in Redcliff, and she came here wearing a false name, with juniper in her hair, to sleep in the bed of the man who burned her pack."

He pointed at me.

"She has been inside his room, his hall and his head for six weeks. She has been reading his maps, and she has been sleeping in his bed."

"Emmett," Tobias said.

"Under the old law, Alpha, a leader whose judgment is bought by a spy's body has lost the right to the seat."

I heard the gasps, and I heard the word body go through the ring.

My face went hot.

"So I challenge you," Emmett said, loud and clear. "Here, now, before the pack. Blood to the yield."

The ring went completely silent.

Tobias set his hand on the porch post.

He looked at me, down the steps, and I saw him wait.

He had promised to answer to me.

He was asking, with his whole face, whether I wanted him to answer for me this time.

I took my hand out of my pocket and walked into the ring.

"Let me say it first," I said.
