Chapter 5: The Alpha Comes Home

I came down the last four steps slowly.

Nobody in the room spoke while I did it.

Caleb had Poppy against his chest. One of his hands was cupped around the back of her head.

He looked up at me, and his face was furious.

"What did you do?"

The words landed in the hall, and I heard my son go quiet inside me.

"Mom," he said finally. "That's the same thing he said last time."

I stopped at the bottom step.

"I did nothing," I said. "Poppy walked up three stairs and threw herself off them. It's on her own camera."

"She's hurt, Joanna."

"She's fine."

"She's bleeding."

"Where?"

Caleb looked down.

Poppy's hands were pressed to her stomach. There was no blood on the white dress. There was no blood on the floor.

He swallowed.

"Caleb," Hazel said from behind him. "Look at your phone."

"Not now."

"Look at it."

She held her own out in front of his face.

The screen showed the livestream, the count at the top, and under it the clip of Poppy's white shoe on the third stair. Every comment was about him.

"Forty thousand people," Hazel said. "They've watched your girlfriend tell your sister she loves you. They've watched her throw herself down your stairs. They watched you run in here and pick her up before your wife."

Caleb's face emptied.

He let go of Poppy's head.

"Turn that off," he said.

"I can't. It isn't mine. It's hers."

"Poppy." He turned to her. His voice had gone low and urgent. "Poppy, end the stream."
