Chapter 17: The Moon Fire
The Moon Fire was lit at dusk.
It burned in the big stone pit outside the pack hall, taller than a man.
All of Ravensworth was there in good coats. Highwater came over the bridge road in a long line of trucks, carrying food.
Our crate of pies went on the long table between a ham and somebody's green bean casserole.
The cook set her rye loaves down beside the widow's dark ones and dared anyone to choose.
The Line truck parked at the edge of the light.
The commander got out and stood beside it with his hands behind his back.
The corporal stayed in the cab with the man in the back seat.
Nobody but us knew who was in it.
Meriel came out of the hall on Lorcan's arm.
She was in white. Long sleeves, a lace collar, her hair down her back in honey waves.
She looked like a girl on top of a cake.
She saw me by the pie table and smiled, small and sweet.
Lorcan didn't smile.
He looked like he hadn't slept since Tuesday.
[You came. You came. You're going to stop it.]
