Chapter 18: June Second
I didn't wear the gold.
On June second I wore a navy dress Ben's sister had lent me, hemmed with safety pins, and Daisy's oldest sneakers.
I turned twenty-five at midnight, on Ben's couch, with Captain asleep on my feet.
Ben gave me a cupcake with a candle in it, and the folded square of paper in a plastic sleeve.
I didn't let go of either until morning.
The Vandermeer Maritime Museum sat on an old pier at the bottom of Manhattan.
Ship models in every case. My grandmother's first tug, rusted red, parked right in the middle of the main hall under a chandelier.
Four hundred people in black tie stood around it holding champagne.
Cameras from three news crews. A videographer on a lift, filming the whole room for the museum's livestream.
I came in through the front doors with Ben on one side and his sister on the other.
Behind us came my guest list.
The old woman from the waiting room wore a church hat.
The pit bull man wore a suit that didn't fit.
The pigeon boy wore a clip-on tie.
